In 2021, I took the picture that is displayed within this work of art. I stood near the intersection of Crenshaw Blvd and Slauson Ave. In my hands, I held a copy of my book entitled 109 — the Nipsey Blue version. I made a color print of the original picture which I adhered to the canvas. I learned to create a collage like this from artist Milton 510. I conversed with Milton 510 via Twitter messages. He encouraged me to follow my passion a d absolutely employ the same medium he uses. In fact, there is an instructional video produced by Milton 510 on YouTube. I learned his style by watching this video. This work of art includes the names of cities where I have traveled, but more importantly, I have had encounters with 109. For instance, I walked into a random motel room in Manama, Bahrain where I was confronted by the sight of 109 on the TV satellite box. In 2018, while visiting the Addis Ababa University Museum, I took a break to go to the bathroom where I noticed 109 written on a door adjacent to the bathroom. In Ireland, I was handed a bill #109 after I ate a meal at a restaurant. So, you see, I have found 109 in strange circumstances around the globe. I have only retold three stories, but I have at least twenty wild stories about encounters with 109. This artwork pays homage to those encounters around the globe in the cities listed.
